Background Information
Each state has unique laws and regulations around notarization. Most states have now authorized Remote Online Notarization but there are still some states that only allow an In-Person Electronic Notarization, Remote Ink Notarization, or still require all notarization to happen in-person on paper.
- Remote Online Notarization (RON): Remote Online Notarization allows a notarization to occur online with the signer appearing before the Notary at the time of notarization using audio-visual technology. The notarized document is electronically signed by the signer and electronically notarized by the Notary. Remote Online Notarization has also been referred to as online notarization, webcam notarization, or virtual notarization.
- In Person Electronic Notarization (IPEN): In Person Electronic Notarization allows a notarization to occur in person with the signer and the Notary. The notarized document is electronically signed by the signer and electronically notarized by the Notary without the virtual requirements.
- Remote Ink Notarization (RIN): Like RON, Remote Ink Notarization allows a notarization to occur online with the signer personally appearing before the Notary at the time of notarization using audio-visual technology. However, RIN requires the notarized document to be signed on paper in ink rather than being signed electronically. For more information on conducting Remote Ink Notarization, please see our article here.
States may require Technology Providers/Vendors to apply with the state directly to offer remote/electronic notarization services to Notary Publics in their state. Other states simply provide the laws and regulations and require the Notary Publics to determine if the technology meets the requirements.
Epic River has reviewed each state's requirements and completed the application process if applicable. Epic River continues to monitor each state for changes. For the remaining states that have not yet adopted remote or electronic notarization, Epic River will continue to review the requirements and complete any additional application processes if necessary.
If you do not see Epic River on your state's list or application, please contact info@epicriver.com for assistance.
